This haunting American folk hymn begins in the beautiful low register of the flute and then builds as the other woodwinds are added. A short theme, derived from the melody and first played by the strings, is shared among the various instruments and used as an ostanato to accompany the hymn tune. As the piece draws to a conclusion, part of this beautiful hymn and the derived ostanato theme bring the piece to a satisfying ending. This composition is a natural for communion, Good Friday, or special music during other times of the year.
